A long crack across your windshield may look like an automatic replacement. In many cases, however, a qualified windshield repair technician may still be able to save the original glass.
The length of the crack is important, but it is not the only factor that determines whether a repair is possible.
What makes a crack repairable?
A technician will examine several things before recommending repair or replacement:
The shape of the crack. A single, relatively clean crack is generally a better repair candidate than damage with several cracks branching in different directions.
The depth of the damage. Automotive windshields are made from laminated glass. Damage that has penetrated both the outside and inside layers generally should not be repaired.
The location. Cracks near certain edges, directly in the driver’s primary viewing area, or around windshield-mounted cameras and sensors may require special consideration.
The condition of the crack. Dirt, moisture, road debris and other contaminants can enter an open crack. The longer the damage remains untreated, the more difficult it may be to achieve the best repair result.

Why save the original windshield?

Do not assume replacement is your only choice
Some companies do not offer long-crack repair and may recommend replacement based primarily on the length of the damage. Before replacing your windshield, have the crack examined by a technician experienced in both chip and long-crack repair.
The safest recommendation may still be replacement, particularly when the damage affects multiple layers, visibility, sensors or the edge of the glass. But a professional assessment can tell you whether the original windshield can be safely preserved.
